Slots: how they work and how they meet bonus terms
Slots are the largest category in almost every online casino lobby, and the category most bonus terms are written around. This page explains the main slot formats, what the numbers in a game's rules mean, and why slots are usually the default choice for clearing wagering. For the eight titles we describe in detail, go to the games overview.
Go to the offerThree common formats
| Format | How wins form | Example on this site |
|---|---|---|
| Paylines | Matching symbols along fixed lines | Legacy of Dead (10 lines) |
| Ways | Matching symbols on adjacent reels, any row | Mental, Mummyland Treasures |
| Scatter pays / grid | A minimum count of matching symbols anywhere | Duck Hunters |
RTP and volatility in plain terms
RTP (return to player) is the theoretical share of stakes a game returns over a very large number of spins. It says nothing reliable about one session. Volatility describes how that return is distributed: low volatility means frequent small wins, high or extreme volatility means long dry runs and rare big hits. For a bonus balance, volatility matters more than a fraction of a percent of RTP, because it decides whether the balance survives long enough to finish wagering.
Why slots dominate bonus wagering
Operators often count slots at 100% towards wagering and table games at a fraction, because slot results are less predictable for the player. Illustrative example, not a Doxxbet term. €900 of required turnover is €900 of slot stakes, but €9,000 of stakes on a game counted at 10%. That is why bonus players gravitate to slots — and why individual high-profile slots or bonus-buy features are sometimes excluded. Always check the specific game list.
Features that need a second look under a bonus
- Bonus buy — paying a multiple of the stake to enter free spins directly; often restricted while a bonus runs.
- Gamble or double up — risking a win to double it; can count against the maximum bet.
- Ante or extra bet — paying more per spin for more features; raises your effective stake.
Choosing a slot for your session
Decide what you want from the session first. If you are working through a bonus, prefer eligible games with moderate volatility and a stake range that fits the maximum bet. If you are playing purely for entertainment without a bonus, the choice is about theme and features — and about a budget you set before starting. Our page on wagering covers the maths in more depth.
